This Started A While Ago…

In 2016, a group of us got together with the intention of paddling some of the iconic rivers of the American West. We’d successfully paddled the bulk of the Columbia River, the Mackenzie River in the Canadian Arctic, the lake system of the Okanagan Valley in Canada, but it was time to go beyond our borders.

One of our group, Kris, a keen and expert scholar of the Lewis and Clark expeditions, suggested the Jefferson River and then into the Missouri River in Montana. It didn’t take much convincing to gather a group of a dozen or so paddlers to commit to the great summer’s paddle trip.

That summer, the waters took us from Cardwell downstream to Fort Benton, and it was a spectacular journey – perhaps the most beautiful stretch being through the Gates of the Mountains!

I’ve done blogs on several of these canoe trips over the years, but for some reason that first Missouri River trip escaped me – I did keep a Journal of our epic travels however, and I’ll be sure to include some of the highlights here.

Our goal this summer is to paddle the next stretch of this iconic river – from Fort Benton to our take-out at Fred Robinson Bridge.

This is a quick opening blog entry, so please Bookmark the site and I’ll take you down the mighty Missouri River with us. I gather there isn’t much wifi coverage in this deeply incised part of the river, but I have a small solar recharger and my trusty iPad to keep up on the blog so that when I have the wifi coverage, I’ll bring you all up to date.
